Buck Nickels & Loose Change
Singer, songwriter and lead guitarist David “Buck Nickels” Westerbeke learned his cowboy ways in Sonoma, California’s Valley of the Moon. As a little fella, he watched his grandpa work cattle on the family ranch and soon had his own horse and saddle. One day, while driving his grandpa’s 1930s sixteen-cylinder Cadillac across the ranch, Buck heard Bob Wills on the radio. He knew he was destined to be a country star. After attending college in Colorado, he returned to the SF Bay Area and, while working at the family business and raising his own family, played with many musicians including the Frank Biner Band and the Crocodiles.
Pedal Steel player Larry ‘Loose Change’ Cragg changes gears as easily as his name implies. A respected guitar repairman and Neil Young’s guitar tech by day, as the sun sinks below the horizon, he dons his black Stetson, slips on his finger picks and sits down at his trusty pedal steel. Growing up north of Chicago, Larry moved west during the summer of 1967 and soon found himself immersed in the San Francisco music scene. Whether performing, or working behind the scenes, music has been Larry’s life. He has played banjo, pedal steel, keyboard, saxophone and more in many of Neil Young’s changing bands. He toured for ten years with Nils Lofgren (of the E Street Band) playing guitar, B-3 and saxophone. He played bari-sax in the Clarence Clemons Band and has played locally with many musicians. His return to playing country began when he was the pedal steel player in The Bulls (Alex Call, Dave Jenkins and Lorin Rowan).
Bass player “Rawhide Ross” Perry brings versatility and experience to Buck Nickels and Loose Change. A veteran multi-instrumentalist (bass, guitar, ukulele and drums) “Rawhide” is no stranger to the Marin music scene. He is currently playing bass with Marin Rockers Learning Curve. He has toured Scandinavia, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand with the Natural Gas Jazz Band, playing drums with the traditional jazz band based in Marin and was a part of the new wave scene playing rhythm guitar for te Young Republicans in the early ‘80s. Ross is the great, great, great grandson of James Ross, founder of the Town of Ross and co-owner of Sunnyside Nursery in San Anselmo.
Drummer CC “Colorado” Dawson grew up in the Colorado Rockies, spent some time in Texas, and joined his father on several rattlesnake roundups. He studied Music at Western State College, traveled and recorded extensively with his own bands Darkstar, and the Dawson-Tate Band through the 80s and 90s. He has spent the past 20 years playing locally with numerous combinations of the great musicians in the S.F. Bay Area; David Gans, the Rowan Brothers, Cole Tate, Lynn Asher and others too numerous to mention!!
Wednesday May 16th
Kinky Buddha – An Aaron Redner (Hot Buttered Rum) side project
Kinky Buddha is the brainchild of Aaron Redner, the fiddle/mandolin player from Hot Buttered Rum. The music consists of Aaron’s original songs and also includes covers meant to get the people singing along! Aaron’s music is heart-felt acoustic rock that draws from Bluegrass, Irish, and Americana traditions. The other members of Kinky Buddha are: Chris Haugen (guitars), Ben Jacobs (keys), Bryan Horne (bass), and Denielle Basom (vocals). The tunes are suitable for the whole family and anyone who enjoys virtuostic violin playing, dancing, and singing at the top of their lungs!
Wednesday May 23rd
Bigelow Tree House
The Oakland based band Bigelow’s Treehouse has the musical ability & mojo to get any dance floor moving. Formed out of a passion for performing live, Bigelow’s Treehouse was started by Mike Bond (drums) and Andrew Balmat (Guitarist/Vocals). After playing with a number of the different Bass players the group found a permanent member in bass player John Hansen thus completing the core of the band’s line up. For live shows the band is usually joined by additional musicians such as guitar player Brian DePrimio and Saxophonist Randy Johnson.
Wednesday May 30th
Jugtown Pirates
The Jugtown Pirates play a multitude of genres including bluegrass, gypsy jazz, ragtime, blues, ballads, classical, psychedelic, and straight up rock and roll. The Matt Eakle Band plays all original instrumental jams inspired by traditions from New Orleans to Bombay. ”Matt Eakle & his band have brought their incredible flute fired fusion energy & music to the Iron Springs Pub & Brewery this past year,” says Mike Altman, owner, “and Fairfax is truly a better place because of this. David Thom Band
The David Thom Band has been a fixture on the Bay Area Bluegrass scene since they started playing together 15 years ago. David Thom, lead vocals and guitar, is passionate about the traditional sound but allows his band to range out into new musical territory from time to time. For this band, tradition means respecting the intentions of the original artists while maintaining a unique identity. The hard driving 5-string banjo of Andy Shaw, the riveting complexity of Brian Judd’s mandolin, the soulful and high-flying fiddle of Paul Shelasky and the rock solid foundation and playful highlights of Jeff King’s bass round out the band. Everyone contributes to the vocal mix as well, bringing variety and intense, chilling harmonies. David Thom, himself a masterful instrumentalist, is highly regarded as a talented and creative singer. The David Thom Band has played at Strawberry, Grass Valley, The Great American Music Hall, The Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival and a long list of smaller festivals and fairs.
We’ll see you at the pub!
