Festival Speed is a Marin County bluegrass combo, Joe Helm on guitar/bass, Bob Hoffman on guitar/bass, Josh Bernstein on banjo, Joe Osborne on fiddle, and Julie Steier on mandolin. We seek to honor the towering progenitors of our genre by playing pure, 190 proof, soulstirrin’, traditional bluegrass. We started as a group of friends who met at local bluegrass jams. Looking to move beyond the jam scene, we formed a band in the spring of 2014 to focus on a set of songs and perfect our sound. When we first started practicing together, our original banjo player (who ended up moving to Cleveland) would use the term “festival speed” to encourage us to play faster. Every song we practiced began with, “This one needs to be played at festival speed!”
